Chickee Structures Constructed by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida or the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

A chickee is an open-sided wooden hut that has a thatched roof of palm or palmetto or other traditional materials, and that does not incorporate any electrical, plumbing, or other non-wood features.

  • All chickees require a building permit and must comply with zoning, environmental, State of Florida Health Dept., drainage and all other Charlotte County ordinances and regulations.
  • Chickees are exempt from the Florida Building Code when built by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida or the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
  • A tribe member building a chickee off the reservation must additionally be a State of Florida licensed contractor and be registered with Charlotte County.
  • A licensed Division One contractor may apply for the building permit as long as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida or the Seminole Tribe of Florida are direct employees of the licensed contractor.
  • An “owner builder” by State of Florida definition may apply for the building permit as long as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida or the Seminole Tribe of Florida are direct employees of the owner builder.
