Janette S. Knowlton was appointed Charlotte County Attorney in November, 2004. She initially joined the County in July, 2000 as Assistant County Attorney handling personal injury and land use litigation, advisor to the Board of Zoning Appeals, and as the prosecutor for the Code Enforcement Board.
Mrs. Knowlton received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1982 from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and received her Juris Doctorate Degree in 1986 from Loyola Law School. Prior to relocating to join Charlotte County Attorney's Office, Mrs. Knowlton practiced law in Los Angeles, California as a partner in a firm that served as General Counsel to the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts - a group of 27 separate, special districts which serviced over five million people in 78 cities. She represented the Districts in their contract negotiations, air/water compliance and enforcement cases, worker's compensation, and legislative matters. She also handled the District's complex environmental and land use planning litigation.
Mrs. Knowlton is a member of the Florida Bar Association and the California Bar Association; and is admitted to federal practice in the 9th and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeals, the Middle District of Florida, and the Central District of California. An 18-year member of the Florida Association of County Attorneys, she was appointed as member of its Board of Directors in 2016, and voted as Treasurer of its Executive Committee in 2018. She is also the Association’s recipient of the 2013 Ethics in Government Award, making Mrs. Knowlton the first County Attorney to receive such recognition in Charlotte County’s history. She was recognized as one of the select group of Florida's Government and Non-Profit Elite Lawyers by Florida Trend Magazine two years in a row in 2016 and 2017. She is active in local civic and professional organizations. From 2006 to 2007, she served as the President of the Charlotte County Bar Association, after having served as Secretary from 2003 to 2004, Treasurer from 2004 to 2005, and Vice President from 2005 to 2006. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Good Shepherd Day School from 2003 to 2007. She has been a member of the Board of Advisors for the Charlotte Harbor Chapter of the National League of Junior Cotillion since 2009.
