Mid-County Regional Library Opens WGCU/PBS Reading Nook

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Nov. 9, 2017) – The Mid-County Regional Library at 2050 Forrest Nelson Blvd. in Port Charlotte is now home to a WGCU Public Media /PBS Reading Nook thanks to support from Arthrex.

WGCU and PBS Kids Reading Nook, sponsored by Arthrex, Inc., gives children the opportunity to increase their literacy skills with fun, engaging multimedia resources. The nook offers an inviting area for children to read, learn and play. Resources include show clips, online games, and self-directed activities based on PBS Kids programs.

“We’re proud to support community-based educational programs like WGCU’s PBS Kids Reading Nooks and are excited to see the impact this program will make on local children,” says Connie Byrne, Arthrex’s director of Recruiting and Charitable Committee Member. “Our dedication to Making People Better around the globe starts right here in Southwest Florida.”

This special, permanent area in the Mid-County Regional Library provides children and their parents with tools to strengthen literacy skills. The resources are available for everyone – children, parents, caregivers and teachers. The nook is a small, colorful space where kids can read a book or do a fun activity. And of course, characters from favorite books and PBS Kids programs are part of the fun.

“The WGCU and PBS Kids Reading Nooks provide Southwest Florida children with new opportunities to read and engage through hands-on activities,” says Paula Sklodowski, WGCU’s Education Outreach coordinator. “PBS has long been considered America’s largest classroom and has been trusted by generations of parents and teachers to provide educational content that helps children build critical literacy, math and social-emotional skills. WGCU is honored to team up with Arthrex to bring this wonderful resource to the Mid-County Regional Library,” Sklodowski added.

Charlotte County Library System’s youth librarian, Hana Brown, says, “We’re honored that WGCU and PBS have given us the opportunity to offer the Reading Nook to our Charlotte County children and caregivers. We know kids will be drawn to the colorful and cozy area and that they’ll love the wild animal themed puzzles and books! We appreciate that children have another spot in our library where they will be able to stop and enjoy themselves in a book or educational activity.”

The WGCU/PBS Reading Nook is open during regular library hours.
