Project Description
Hurricane impacts caused widespread damage to roadways, bridges, and drainage systems across multiple sites. Severe erosion undermined seawalls, abutments, slopes, and guardrails, creating large voids and washouts that compromised shoulders, sidewalks, and roadway edges. Multiple sinkholes developed due to stormwater intrusion and failing or separated CMP and RCP pipes, requiring excavation, pipe replacement, and collar repairs.
Bridges, including Oyster Creek, sustained slope protection failures and backfill loss, leaving abutments and piers vulnerable to scour and requiring emergency stabilization. Roadway sections washed out over lengths ranging from 60 to 155 feet, with displaced guardrails, eroded canal banks, and undermined embankments. Sidewalks were heavily damaged, showing settlement, undermining, and drop-offs exceeding 100 feet in some areas.
Drainage systems exhibited pipe separations, clogged culverts, and outfall washouts, with embankment and swale regrading needed throughout. Additional damages included fallen trees causing pavement failures, destroyed signage, damaged light poles, railing impacts, and compromised fencing.
Systemwide restoration will require roadway reconstruction, embankment stabilization, debris and sediment removal, drainage pipe replacement, and installation of scour countermeasures to protect bridges and seawalls from further erosion.
