Project Description

Design and construction of upland and wetland trails throughout William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial park. Elements of the project include nature trails, elevated boardwalks, education signage and kiosks and fitness equipment.

Project Impacts

Wetland impacts have been identified for the project. Wetland mitigation credits need to be purchased and are listed under other in the project budget breakdown.

Latest Updates

Finalizing 60% design plans and identifying wetland impacts 

Wetland impacts have been identified and design is ready for approval. Permitting applications have been submitted to Southwest Florida Water Management District and U.S. Army Core of Engineers permitting will be required as well. The total permitting process is expected to take aproximately 18 months. 

Permits were submitted to the various permitting agencies on 11/23/2021 and could take up to 18 months to gain approval. Adjustments will be made to the plans as we receive comments back from the permitting agencies.

Onsite meeting with SWFWMD scheduled for 3/11/22.

Comments and responses trasnmitted with Army Core of Engineers. Project is still in permitting phase with ACOE.

90% plans are in progress

Approval to begin the tree survey has been authorized.

Tree survey is complete and the project is awaiting approval from ACOE

ACOE approval received in May, clearing of access has begun for contractor. Documents in preparation for bid process

Bid documents were completed and sent to Purcahsing in July.

Project is out to bid and sealed bids are due back September 20, 2023.

Bids were received back and are scheduled to go to the Board of County Commissioners for vendor award approval in November 2023.

Construction awarded and waiting on NOC from granting agency. Construction is anticipated to start January 2024.

NOC from granting agency was received and surveying on the site will begin January 22, 2024.

Construction on the site began on 1/29/24.

Boardwalks are are 35% complete

Boardwalks are 95% complete and purchase orders have been entered for informational kiosks and fitness equipment. Fitness equipment is ready for the permitting process from the vendor.

Elevated boardwalks and creation of the upland trails are 100% complete. ADA surfacing still needs to be installed in the upland trails. Fitness euipment permitting is compete and installation is scheduled for late August. 

Fitness equipment installation is complete and informational kiosks are in permitting with the County.
