CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Dec. 9, 2020) – The Charlotte County Utilities Department was recognized in a recent competition for water service delivery. The Utilities Department was recognized as  "Distribution System of the Year" amongst other utility providers across the state of Florida who serve between 46,000 and 69,999 customers. The criteria for this prestigious award included water quality, operations records, maintenance, professionalism, safety, emergency preparedness and cross-connection control. This is the third year in a row the department has received this award. Outstanding Job!

The Utilities Department was recognized as "Distribution System of the Year" amongst other utility providers across the state of Florida who serve between 46,000 and 69,999 customers. The criteria for this prestigious award included water quality, operations records, maintenance, professionalism, safety, emergency preparedness and cross-connection control.

Utilities Wins Regional Best-Tasting Drinking Water Contest

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (March 7, 2019) – The Charlotte County Utilities Department won the annual Best Tasting Drinking Water Contest in Region X held by the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA). Region X represents drinking water utilities in a five-county region: Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee and Sarasota. Charlotte County’s water sample won the best tasting out of the seven utilities that entered the contest. Charlotte County Utilties also won this contest in 2017.

Burnt Store Water Reclamation Facility Honored for Outstanding Safety

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2018) – The Burnt Store WRF was honored with a Safety Award from the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operations Association (FWPCOA). Congratulations to Chief Plant Operator John Thompson and his staff.

Facilities Commended for Outstanding Safety

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2018) – Charlotte County Utilities' East Port, West Port and leachate water reclamation facilities and the Burnt Store water treatment plant were all commended for "leadership, promotion, service and performance rendered through an outstanding safety program for the year 2017." The honor was bestowed by the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Nov. 9, 2017) – Charlotte County Utilities Department's Burnt Store Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) was honored by the Florida Section of the AWWA's Water Conservation Award of Excellence. Chief Operator John Thompson and his staff created a Research & Demonstration Garden that received a "Show of Excellence" in the public education category. 

Burnt Store Facility Commended for Safety

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Aug. 31, 2017) – Charlotte County Utilities' Burnt Store WRF was commended for "leadership, promotion, service and performance rendered through an outstanding safety program for the year 2016." The honor was bestowed by the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association.

Reclamation Facilities Honored for Outstanding Safety

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (April 16, 2017) – The Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) honored the Burnt Store WRF with the first place award for the 2017 FWEA Safety Award for Class C facilities. The West Port WRF received the third place award for the 2017 FWEA Safety Award for Class B facilities. These awards recognize the outstanding effort of the management and operational staff which resulted in zero lost time accidents during calendar year 2016 at these facilities.

Public Servant Honored as a Community Hero in National Competition

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (March 22, 2017) – The Utilities Department's Judy Hunter was honored by the International City/County Management Association as a finalist in the "Life, Well Run Community Hero" campaign.

Utilities Receives 2016 National Association of Counties' Achievement Award

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2016) – The Charlotte County Utilities Department launched its Transformation Initiative in 2014 when consultant KPMG conducted an operational audit of the utility, which serves 56,000 water and sewer customers. The audit found 45 areas where the utility could improve customer service, enhance employee training, focus leaders on long-term strategy and save money.  The Utilities Team was honored at a Charlotte County Commission Meeting in September 2016.

Burnt Store WRF presented with the 2015 Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association Safety Award

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Aug. 10, 2016) – The Burnt Store WRF was honored with a Safety Award from the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operations Association (FWPCOA). Congratulations to Chief Plant Operator John Thompson and his staff.

The Burnt Store WRF was also commended by the FWPCOA for safety in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The West Port WRF was commended by the FWPCOA for safety in 2011, 2012 and 2014. The Rotonda WRF was commended by the FWPCOA for safety in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

2016 Florida Excellence Awards Honors Charlotte County Utilities Department

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (May 13, 2016) – Charlotte County Utilities Department was awarded a Best Practices Award from the Florida Excellence in Governance. They were recognized for "Implementation of a comprehensive strategic planning process that included integration of customer, workforce, information technology and capital improvement initiatives to support the organization’s mission with associated measures, targets and accountability systems." The Utilities Department and KPMG consultants were honored at a banquet on May 12, 2016 and accepted their award.

Charlotte County Utilities Burnt Store Water Treatment Plant Earns Commendations

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (March 8, 2016) – The Charlotte County Utilities Department was recognized during Florida Rural Water Association’s “Focus on Change” workshop. The Burnt Store Water Treatment Plant received the 2015 Plant Operations Excellence Award from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The commendation cited outstanding treatment plant operations, maintenance, and compliance. “Ben Jacobsen, along with his entire water treatment plant staff, are clearly outstanding in their efforts to provide, safe and reliable drinking water to our customers in the Burnt Store service area. We are proud to congratulate their efforts,” said Stephen Bozman, Treatment Facilities Superintendent.

The Burnt Store WRF also received the FDEP's Plant Operations Excellence Award in 2008 and 2012.
