Charlotte County Maintains Class 5 CRS Rating

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 9, 2025) – Charlotte County has once again earned a Class 5 rating from the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System. This means property owners in high-risk flood zones can continue receiving up to 25% off their flood insurance premiums – a savings of approximately $6.6 million per year for Charlotte County residents.

There are currently 68 communities classified as Class 5 in Florida, and 211 Class 5 communities nationwide, placing Charlotte County among a select group recognized for strong flood risk reduction efforts.

FEMA reviews the CRS rating every few years. The Class 5 rating reflects Charlotte County’s ongoing efforts to reduce flood risk, including efforts in public outreach, mapping, flood damage prevention, and emergency response.

CRS ratings range from 1 to 10, with Class 1 providing the largest insurance discounts. With the current Class 5 rating, property owners in Special Flood Hazard Areas receive a 25% discount, while some properties outside of these areas also receive savings.

Charlotte County has been part of the CRS program since 1992 and continues to improve its flood safety programs. The county is now working toward achieving a Class 4 rating, which would mean even more savings for residents.
