Fake Emails Impersonating County Staff

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2025) – The Charlotte County Community Development Department is alerting residents to a new wave of fraudulent emails impersonating county staff. These fraudulent messages are part of an ongoing phishing scheme designed to deceive recipients into sharing personal or financial information.

The latest scam involves emails that appear to come from a legitimate county employee, using names and email addresses that closely resemble the official @CharlotteCountyFL.gov domain. However, these addresses are unauthorized and fraudulent upon closer inspection.

These phishing emails may contain links, attachments, or urgent requests, such as asking for sensitive data or soliciting payments. Although they may look professional, they are not sent by the Charlotte County Community Development Department or any authorized county source.

How to Protect Yourself:
  • Do not click on links or download attachments from suspicious or unexpected emails.
  • Verify the sender by checking that the email ends in @CharlotteCountyFL.gov.
  • Never share personal or financial information through email.
  • If something seems suspicious, contact the department directly to confirm its legitimacy.

Anyone who receives a questionable email claiming to be from the Community Development Department should report it immediately by calling 941-743-1201 or emailing CommunityDevelopment@CharlotteCountyFL.gov
