Summer Skunk Ape Hunt

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (June 24, 2025) – Do you believe in the Skunk Ape? Whether you're a true believer or just love a good local legend, Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources invites you to step into the mystery this summer with our Squatch Watch Hunt in Charlotte County’s Environmental Parks and Preserves.

According to Florida folklore, the Skunk Ape is a tall, ape-like creature covered in dark hair and known for an odor – often compared to a wet dog or rotten cabbage. It’s been spotted near roads, hiding in the brush, and lurking near bodies of water.

This summer, we’re challenging our community to explore the natural beauty of Charlotte County while keeping your eyes peeled for signs of the elusive Skunk Ape. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors, spark curiosity in young explorers, and keep local lore alive.

There is a photo contest.

Ways to Enter & Win

1. Submit a photo of a potential Skunk Ape "sighting"– the photo must be from a Charlotte County environmental park or preserve.

2. Snap a photo of you enjoying your search in one of the parks or preserves

3. Email submissions to PRSocial@CharlotteCountyFL.gov or tag Charlotte County Parks & Recreation on Facebook.

The deadline for photo submission is Aug. 1.
