Protected Species

Natural Resources staff helps to protect both state and federally listed species such as the Florida scrub-jay, various wading bird species, sea turtles, eastern indigo snakes and gopher tortoises by:
  • Acquiring conservation lands
  • Managing natural habitats
  • Monitoring the status and populations of different species
  • Coordinating with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
  • Ensuring state and federal permitting requirements are met
  • Developing conservation plans for listed species, such as the Charlotte County Scrub-Jay Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP)
